Feeling Upbeat – Protein Drink Review

I seem to have reviewed a lot of protein based foodstuffs recently, so this time, I’m adding a drink to the mix.

Upbeat got in touch and sent me some vouchers so I could try out some of their drinks. High in protein and low in fat, these are available in four different flavours: Strawberry, Bueberry & Raspberry, Mango & Passionfruit, and the brand new Chocolate Orange flavour. Suitable for vegetarians, each 250ml bottle contains fewer than 150 calories and is produced from fresh milk.

Following much debate over what this was…

…I finally managed to get to the shops. Upbeat drinks are readily available on the high street from WH Smith and from supermarkets such as Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury and the Co-op, however they are obviously very popular in Eltham as they were sold out everywhere. I finally managed to track down a bottle of the Mango & Passionfruit flavour.

I’m not going to lie, this wasn’t what I personally would have chosen but it’s all there was. I LOVE mango, but I’ve never been fond of it in a drink. The texture of Upbeat is great, smooth and somewhere between milk and a thin yoghurt, making it refreshing and filling all at once, but I wasn’t keen on the flavour. It was obviously packed of fruit, unfortunately the sight of it reminded me of that yellow medicine the doctor’s used to prescribe when I was little…I am well aware that many people loved that medicine. I’m not one of those people. That said, fans of mango and passionfruit in a drink will probably like this.

I finally tracked down the Blueberry & Raspberry flavour a couple of weeks after and much preferred this. I love both fruits and personally think that they work well together. I enjoyed this after a long run and felt great after. It’s important to think about taking in some protein to help recover after a workout and this was an easy and delicious option.

I’m yet to try the Strawberry and the new Chocolate Orange flavour, but as a recovery drink after a hard session, or simply as a mid afternoon snack, these drinks are quick and easy with flavours to suit most. Just don’t try to find anything other than Mango & Passionfruit in South East London!

Upbeat Drinks retail at £1.79 in most major supermarkets.
