If you’ve been following me for a while, you will be aware that I really love my hair. And if you’re not aware, just look to the side panel. Yep, that’s me. A walking, talking mermaid.
People often ask me where I get my hair done and it’s often got me shout outs in races. When I’m in town, people stop to chat. It’s a great conversation starter and the truth is, I feel more like me when I have colour in my hair. So in the current absence of running, while I’m on the injury bench, I thought I’d talk about my hair.
After all, hair is part of self-care right? And self-care is part of wellness, fitness is part of wellness, so is it really such a leap? A run makes me feel good and so does my hair, so let’s go with it. I have been feeling a bit sorry for myself over the last fortnight. My ankle is still swollen and sore. Although I am looking forward to my trip to Tallin, it’s disappointing that I’m no longer going for the primary purpose. My hair colour had also faded to a mint-green, had a fair bit of root and my fringe desperately needed to be cut. So when Rockalily tweeted on Friday night that they had a last-minute cancellation with the magical Charley on Saturday, my husband told me to go.
You’re sad. Get your hair done. You’ll feel better.
So Saturday saw me sat in Rockalily, cooking with some bleach, back in my happy place.
Rockalily is known as “London’s Cutest Hair Salon” and it’s an apt description. Located in East London, it’s a tiny place on a nondescript parade of shops, identified by the fabulous artwork on their shutters. Walk indoors and you can believe that you’re in a vintage living room, if not for the music playing and the pots of colourful hairdye. Ree, the owner is a fabulously stylish, tattooed feminist who opened a salon…without being a hairdresser. I first became of Rockalily in 2015 and immediately yearned to go, adoring the styles and colours on their website. In 2016, I finally took the plunge.
I really enjoyed having my hair done like this. To the point where I went back a few months later to have it touched up…and changed my fringe colour!
You can see this got soaked moments after leaving the salon, but I loved this colour! However, I had been playing with the idea of green mermaid hair for a long time and I finally took the plunge in February 2017.
I almost cried with joy over this colour and style, discovering that these are my hair colours. I have been sticking to the mermaid theme since.
And now…for my new look. I call this “Mermaid in Space.”
All of these looks have been created by Rockalily Cuts. The fabulous Charley is a wizard with her painting box of hair dyes. I haven’t always remained faithful, I have had the colour topped up elsewhere in between as I no longer live in London, but the lure of Rockalily and their talent always pulls me back. They are the only salon I would trust with starting a whole new look from scratch.
I’m not going to lie, if you have a lot of hair like I do, you could be there for hours. But hair colour is a committment and if you don’t have the time to invest in the original appointment and then the maintenance after, I would consider whether it’s the right thing for you to do. The cost isn’t cheap, but these stylists LOVE their job and are skilled at what they do. You’ll be looked after and the appointment is almost like going for a fun night in the pub with your mates. I may be on crutches, but I left on Saturday feeling fabulous, tossing my shiny locks, looking forward to catching up with Geraldine who came to keep me company.
Like I said, getting my hair done boosts my mood. I feel fabulous.
What makes you feel amazing?
psssssst – I’d never usually point out that a post isn’t sponsored when it isn’t, but this really isn’t, Rockalily is just THAT amazing!
